The Art of Teaching Writing with Gail Loane
The Child: the heart of the matter
"Many NZ schools are struggling to have common understandings and practices around the teaching of writing – evident in student results, teacher knowledge, teacher practice and the fact that the issue is still a national focus. I believe that we are making too hard a job of it and that we need to focus firmly on the phrase that ERO are currently using:
The Child: the heart of the matter"
This workshop will explore the ‘art of teaching writing’ through discussion around:
1. Our beliefs about teaching writing and how they drive what we do
2. The frequent mismatch often evident between the needs of our learners and what we provide – what makes a match?
3. How we can plan to bring relevance and authenticity to the writing programme for all our learners
4. A lesson design which caters for all learners

Teacher Education Refresh Programme
The Teacher Education Refresh (TER) programme is currently funded by the Ministry of Education for those teacher required by the Teaching Council to complete a TER.
The Kohia Centre programme can be completed in 2–3 months. It is delivered through a combination of 4 face-to-face workshop days, online modules/tasks and a 4 week practicum in a school. (Teachers already employed in long term teaching positions can use their current position to demonstrate effective teaching practice).
