Finding their voice – how to get young writers started with Jane van der Zeyden

Supporting young children with learning how to write can be challenging but all children have experiences, ideas and opinions that they can use to create meaningful written texts. This workshop will explore different approaches to helping children learn to write. We will consider what skills are important to develop, different approaches to teaching writing and how to manage and organise writing lessons. There will be time to consider the aspects of writing that we need to be explicitly teaching and practical writing contexts and experiences will be shared with participants.

At the completion of the course participants will be able to:

1. Understand the stages that early writers go through with learning to write.

2. Identify the writing skills that need to be explicitly taught to students.

3. Be aware of different approaches to teaching writing interactive writing, shared writing and independent writing.
