Workshop 'Hauora and Learning Success Tools for Māori Boys'

Professional development (PD)

Posted: 24 June 2019
Notice reference #: 1H9vSX

Jon and Marama Winder support the national imperative for the well-being and academic success of our Māori boys through this powerful workshop that has had high reviews. Jon has worked in a number of Māori and state schools in this field with close ties with Māori elders. Jon has a long success working with boys and a commitment to high educational and well-being outcomes for Māori youth. He believes that Te Ao Māori (Māori world view) has much to offer education in its holistic approach, particularly the application of Tā Mason Durie’s Te Whare Tapa Whā framework. Jon and Marama support teachers to find ways to utilise this framework within their own school. This workshop uses a strength-based inquiry approach, recognising innate ability naturally occurring in the DNA of the learner. Following Kaupapa Māori approaches, Jon and Marama support teachers to help Māori boys reclaim their mauri, mana and whakapapa to their own cultural identity, knowing that from this viewpoint, all things are interconnected, including relationships to whānau, whenua and their learning pathways.

Outcomes include:

  • How to apply Sir Mason Durie’s Te Whare Tapa Wha model to your school
  • How to support Māori boys to restore their mauri - life force – and their mana
  • Practical ways to integrate whanau, wairua, the physical and mental, emotional aspects into learning
  • Using the science and experience to know how boys succeed at school
  • Reclaiming ways Māori elders learnt, linking traditional ways of learning to modern contexts
