Auckland Girls' Chess Championship 2019
When: 9am to 2.30pm.
Where: Mt Albert War Memorial Hall, 751-761 New North Rd, Mount Albert, Auckland.
Entry fee: $17.50 per person.
Organised by Waitakere Chess Club Inc. for the New Zealand Chess Federation.
The Auckland Girls' Championship is held as 3 separate tournaments in the following age groups: over 12, under 12, and under 10 (age at 1 January 2019).
Age group titles are also awarded for under 16, under 14, under 8 and under 6 – with at least 3 players required in each age group for titles.
Girls represent their schools as individuals. They don’t have to be expert players but do need to know the basic rules of chess. It is not a knockout competition and everyone gets to play 6 games.
The time control for each game is 15 minutes plus 5 seconds per move per player. This is to ensure rounds run to time.
This is an annual NZ Chess Federation event to encourage girls to try chess in an all-girl environment.
The competition has proved popular with girls of all ages since it began in 2001, and has been very successful in encouraging more girls to play chess, and identifying female players with potential.
Many have gone on to represent NZ in international tournaments.
