Understanding and Supporting Students with Autism in the Mainstream Classroom (for Secondary)
This workshop will introduce participants to the characteristics of autism identified in children.
Participants will recognise how autism is likely to manifest in the mainstream classroom and gain teaching strategies for managing likely behaviours and learning characteristics.
The workshop will cover:
- The history of autism
- Diagnosis and treatment
- Current cognitive assessments and theories in autism
- Classroom strategies to support effective learning and behaviour.
Participants will discuss real-world scenarios they have experienced and will be offered an opportunity to discuss and problem-solve specific student behaviours in their own context.

Teacher Education Refresh Programme
The Teacher Education Refresh (TER) programme is currently funded by the Ministry of Education for those teacher required by the Teaching Council to complete a TER.
The Kohia Centre programme can be completed in 2–3 months. It is delivered through a combination of 4 face-to-face workshop days, online modules/tasks and a 4 week practicum in a school. (Teachers already employed in long term teaching positions can use their current position to demonstrate effective teaching practice).
