Project Based Learning at High Tech High- John Santos & Nick Pattison
Project Based Learning
As our technology, economy and society continues to evolve, so must our education system evolve to support students in developing relevant skill sets and understanding that will provide them access and engage them in meaningful learning opportunities.
High Tech High is a K-12 project based school in San Diego, California. They have been an example of the powerful impact that Project Based Learning can have with learners for almost 20 years.
John Santos is a founding member of High Tech High and has been passionate about PBL and engaging adults in professional development throughout his career as an educator.
John Santos from High Tech High and Nick Pattison from Ormiston Junior College will combine to showcase world leading project based learning that empower teachers to successful contextualised this learning model within New Zealand.
John will reveal and demonstrate the valuable insights and learning from his 16 years of working at High Tech High who have pioneered project based learning. These insights will be shared through a series of hand-on activities which have been developed to align to all areas of the NZ curriculum and which will specifically include the new digital curriculum. Nick Pattison will work alongside John to support the inclusion of Matauranga and New Zealand specific examples that teachers can use to immediately implement within their classrooms.
Nick Pattison is a leading STEM teaching specialist who started New Zealand’s first STEM immersion class at Rongomai Primary in Otara in 2014 to show how STEM education can provide accelerated learning for Maori and Pasifika students.
Together we will ideate, prototype, critique and plan projects to be implemented in your classrooms. We look forward to the collaborative work that lies ahead.
