Keeping Track of Student Progress in Maths, with Jill Smythe
This course is designed to guide teachers in their understanding of formative mathematics assessments within classrooms, as well as wider assessment practices used to inform understanding of knowledge and strategies.
The facilitator will explain reasons for implementing assessments undertaken in classrooms, such as JAM, GLoSS, PAT, eAsTTle and IKAN and explore how the data from these can be used to plan future teaching and learning that ensures the progress of each student. Ideas for management of data in ways that make tracking visible and easy to monitor will be provided.
The session will also address how to identify misconceptions students may have about concepts and what to do to eliminate these.
At the completion of the course participants will:
- Understand the reasons for implementing assessments undertaken in classrooms, such as JAM, GLoSS, PAT, eAsTTle and IKAN
- Know how to analyse the results from assessments and see where each student’s needs /and strengths are, and what they need to know to progress further
- Understand how to analyse results and identify misconceptions in both assessments tasks and observations
- Develop knowledge of ways to display data for easy monitoring
- Develop awareness of equipment and activities used to teach important mathematics concepts.
Teacher Education Refresh Programme
The Teacher Education Refresh (TER) programme is currently funded by the Ministry of Education for those teacher required by the Teaching Council to complete a TER.
The Kohia Centre programme can be completed in 2–3 months. It is delivered through a combination of 4 face-to-face workshop days, online modules/tasks and a 4 week practicum in a school. (Teachers already employed in long term teaching positions can use their current position to demonstrate effective teaching practice).
