Otago Down Syndrome Association (ODSA) Conference 2019

Conference / AGM Otago

Posted: 11 February 2019
Notice reference #: 1H9quw

The Otago Down Syndrome Association is presenting a full-day conference for teachers, teacher aides, SENCOs and RTLBs who work with students with Down Syndrome.

This conference is the first of its kind in Otago and Southland to focus solely on challenges faced by students with Down Syndrome in a mainstream school.

We have attracted speakers who currently work with children with down syndrome and have had continued success helping students achieve their education goals. We have assembled these presenters so that they may share their strategies with others who work with these students. This will allow teachers, teacher aides, SENCOs and RTLBs the opportunity to better understand the needs of their students and to improve current strategies in the classroom for the students long and short term benefit.

The presenters will focus specifically on the unique challenges faced by students with Down Syndrome and strategies you can use to overcome those challenges.

The topics covered at this conference will include:

  • The learning profile of students with Down Syndrome
  • Use of visual supports and strategies to support learning
  • Sensory processing and its impact on learning
  • Positive behaviour support
  • Adapting the curriculum.

It is our intention to make this an annual event. Next year we anticipate the conference will be a two-day event.
