The University of Otago Junior Mathematics Competition 2019

Student competitions and scholarships New Zealand (nationwide)

Posted: 31 January 2019
Notice reference #: 1H9qiP

This competition is being held this year on Wednesday 3 April. The competition, for Years 9, 10, and 11 students, focusses on problem solving in maths, an area of the curriculum not necessarily dealt with elsewhere. Many younger students also enter as 'honorary Y9s'. 2019 is the 34th year of the competition.

There will be eight questions again this year. All students answer six. The competition can be sat at any time on 3 April. The questions provide a good opportunity for students to get started along with giving some challenge as well. So much of current teaching and NZQA assessments are about students solving problems; they are expected to be able to read and interpret the information to understand the problem – the questions provide opportunity to engage in relational thinking (merit) and extended abstract thinking (excellence). In other words it provides a good practice opportunity for NCEA examinations.

Entries are $5 per pupil for digital (print the questions yourself) entry only or $6 per pupil if you want the question and answer booklets couriered to you. See the website for details. $6 entries must be received by Friday 8 March. We will send entry information to all schools in early February. If your school doesn't receive an invitation by email you may still enter by emailing us at You can also find more information about the competition at our website
