Screens and Teens Study

The National Institute for Health Innovation (NIHI) would like to invite parents/caregivers of teenagers aged 13-17 years, living in the Auckland area to participate in a focus group to help us understand parents’ attitudes and practices around their teenagers’ screen use.

Ideally, we would like to talk to parents who are concerned about the amount of time teenagers spend on screens today. Feedback from the focus groups will help us design a programme to help parents manage their teenager’s screen time.

What is involved if you participate?

You will need to attend ONE focus group (options below), which will run for approximately 1.5 hours.

All focus groups will be held at the University of Auckland, Tāmaki Campus on 261 Morrin Rd, St Johns and will be catered.

If your teen is aged 13-15 years, you can choose to attend ONE of the following Focus Groups:

  • Wednesday 7 November 7pm
  • Tuesday 20 November 7pm
  • Wednesday 21st November 7pm

If your teen is aged 16-17 years, you can choose to attend ONE of the following Focus Groups:

  • Thursday 8 November 7pm
  • Wednesday 14 November 7pm

Dad's only Focus Group:

  • Tuesday 13 November 7pm

You will receive a $50 voucher to compensate you for your time. Dinner will be provided.

If, after reading the Participant Information Sheet, you are interested in taking part in the study, you can fill in the screening questionnaire and register for the study here, or if you would like further information, please email us at
