Health and PE Scholarship: Deepening Knowledge of Theory and Concepts
Health and PE scholarship: deepening knowledge of theory and concepts, by Jenny Robertson
This workshop will provide HPE teachers with the opportunity to deepen knowledge of underlying concepts of the learning area in order to strengthen the teaching of the conceptual knowledge and provide the foundation for students entering HPE scholarship. Extracts and summaries from university level coursework will be used in combination with short presentations and workshop activities. Concepts will include an exploration of diverse understandings of health and wellbeing, the socio-ecological perspective and the determinants of health (including issues of inequality and inequity), theoretical models, frameworks and approaches to health promotion, and social justice. Although these understandings draw mainly from health education in the NZC, it is envisaged that the workshop will also have relevance to PE and home economics teachers.
At the completion of the course participants will:
- Understand the theory that informs health education in the senior secondary school.
- Know how to apply theoretical understandings in practice
