Spirit of Adventure Virtual Field Trip

Spirit of Adventure – exploring hauora during an inspirational sailing adventure. 

Activities during this field trip include:

  • building self-confidence by climbing the mast and swimming alongside the ship
  • developing leadership skills while putting up the big sails
    communicating with new people to help prepare a meal
  • learning to be resilient by cleaning the ship
  • working in teams to raft ashore
  • dealing with close confines
  • learning new skills by sailing small boats

To prepare for this field trip, LEARNZ content will support inquiry into:

  • sailing
  • adventure and hauora (Taha wairua / spiritual well-being; taha
  • hinengaro / mental and emotional well-being; taha tinana / physical well-being; and taha whānau / social well-being)
  • seeking and embracing challenges
  • having fun and finding your spirit
  • the Outdoors and the Sea as places to learn and develop skills
  • sailing ships
  • navigation
  • sailing terms and ideas
  • the field trip location - Auckland, City of Sails

During this field trip you will:

  • see Shelley's tweets on twitter
  • meet the skipper, the professional crew of the sailing ship and the support people
  • meet some of the 30 young people and their buddies who will be onboard the sailing ship
  • explore the roles of crew members and buddies and how they have trained and prepared themselves for this adventure
  • be inducted onto the sailing ship
  • go over the plans, preparations and challenges of the voyage
  • live with everyone onboard - prepare meals, sail the ship, do a stint on night watch, take part in challenges, do chores, keep clean, and
  • maintain physical health
  • trim the sails and steer the ship on full day voyages
  • learn about the connections between English, Māori and Pasifika language, with sailing, environment, culture and Hauora or well-being
  • spend time outdoors on an island (TBC), connecting with the environment and understanding its patterns.
