Love Your – Waste, or Valuable Resource?

Projects and programmes New Zealand (nationwide)

Ever wondered what happens to your rubbish?

On this 2017 field trip you will firstly look at waste from the perspective of energy, with a focus on generating energy from organics or green waste to power electric vehicles.

Secondly, you will take a big picture view of the Kate Valley landfill as an entire ecosystem, investigating its natural and built environments with their people, machines, buildings, animals, plants, microbes, soil, water, air, and the interactions between them.

This field trip takes you to the Kate Valley landfill in North Canterbury. In 2005 Kate Valley replaced 52 old landfills spread throughout Canterbury and combined them into a single operation.

During this field trip you will:

  • Go for ride on an electric vehicle
  • Be inducted and get kitted out so you can enter the working area of the landfill
  • Test the special liner used in the landfill using liquids and sharp objects
  • Inspect the network of pipes in the landfill, used to collect methane gas from organic waste
  • Visit the on-site generators to find out how they make electricity
  • Measure the amount of electricity generated from landfill material
  • Look at the total energy balance of the Kate Valley landfill operation
  • Investigate the plants and animals of the landfill ecosystem
  • See how Kate Valley landfill has provided an opportunity for local native species restoration projects and for the creation of new recreation amenities
