Classroom resources New Zealand (nationwide)

Posted: 21 July 2017
Notice reference #: 1H9de3

On this field trip you will join students (virtually) from other schools on the 45m, three-masted barquentine Spirit of New Zealand! You will be part of a team to help sail the ship around the Hauraki Gulf as well as compete for the prestigious Spirit Trophy!

To prepare for this field trip, LEARNZ content will support inquiry into:

  • sailing
  • adventure and hauora (Taha wairua / spiritual wellbeing; taha hinengaro / mental and emotional wellbeing; taha tinana / physical wellbeing; and taha whānau / social wellbeing)
  • sailing ships
  • navigation
  • sailing terms and ideas
  • the Hauraki Gulf.

During this field trip you will:

  • see Shelley's tweets on twitter
  • meet the skipper and the professional crew of the sailing ship
  • meet school students who are members of teams that will operate the sailing ship
  • explore the roles of crew members and how they have trained and prepared themselves for this adventure
  • be inducted onto the sailing ship
  • go over the plans, preparations and challenges of the voyage
  • live with everyone onboard – prepare meals, sail the ship, do a stint on night watch, take part in team challenges, do chores, keep clean, and maintain physical health
  • trim the sails and steer the ship on full-day voyages
  • learn about the connections between English, Māori and Pasifika language, with sailing, environment, culture and Hauora or wellbeing
  • spend time outdoors on an island in the Hauraki Gulf, connecting with the environment and understanding its patterns.
