Sexuality Education – Policy Into Practice
This workshop for health education teachers will develop and deepen understanding of sexuality education in The New Zealand Curriculum. The workshop will model the teaching process and facilitation of sexuality education activities.
A teaching as inquiry approach will be used to design programme content and teaching and assessment strategies that meet learner needs. A range of resources to support learning will be explored
Relevant education policy with reference to sexuality education will be included and consideration will be given to the Ministry of Education Sexuality Education: a guide for principals, boards of trustees, and teachers (2015).
Teachers will have the opportunity to discuss their sexuality education successes and challenges highlighting strategies to address issues that teachers encounter with more controversial and problematic sexuality education contexts.
The changing emphasis of sexuality education across Y9–13 (shaped by the underlying concepts) will also be discussed, as will the potential scope of sexuality education and its connections with gender and relationships education, and teaching and learning related to resilience and mental health.
