Inclusive sport design lowers barriers to physical activity

This year, for the first time, New Zealand will host the International Symposium of Adapted Physical Activity.
Now in their third year, the New Zealand Teachers’ Games are a great opportunity for teachers from around New Zealand to test their skills at sports like futsal, netball, waka ama and badminton, while enjoying each other’s company on (and off) the sports field.
The New Zealand Teachers’ Games (NZTG) will be held in Mt Maunganui from Sunday 29 September to Wednesday 2 October 2019.
Most of the old sporting favourites are back this year, including golf, beach volleyball, clay target shooting, ten-pin bowling and darts; along with a few first-time sports, including tennis and quick-rip rugby. A new event this year will combine bowls, petanque and golf croquet.
Early indications are that more than 600 participants are expected for the 2019 games, which are delivered by School Sport NZ.
“We recognise how important all school staff are in providing sporting opportunities for their students and anyone on a school payroll is eligible,” says Garry Carnachan, CEO of School Sport NZ, “so bring along the groundsman and your teacher aides. While sport is always competitive, the focus is on enjoyment.”
“What an awesome event!” said Emma Talbot (Aquinas College), following last year’s event.
“We have had a great couple of days, and it was so well run. Home now with sore bodies and lots of great memories and we will definitely be back next year!”
Information and registration details are on the NZTG(external link) website or follow on Facebook(external link).
