Self-expression and intergenerational connections in the arts

New Zealand schools are feeling the impact of engaging with arts practitioners to immerse students in enriching learning experiences with wide-ranging benefits.
School staff across the country are encouraged to sign up for the 2018 New Zealand Teachers’ Games, which will be held at Mount Maunganui from Sunday 30 September to Tuesday 2 October.
Last year’s games attracted 520 competitors, and there are sports to suit all levels of competitiveness and fitness – from darts and dodgeball to squash and golf. There’s also a series of social events including trivia, a great race and wine and food activities.
“The games are an opportunity for schools to provide positive health and wellbeing experiences, confidence building and professional learning for staff. They are a great opportunity for team building and networking, and last year the positive, fun buzz was amazing,” New Zealand Teachers’ Games (NZTG) event manager Mike Summerell says.
Garry Carnachan, executive director of New Zealand Secondary School Sports Council, said: “The games are about re-engaging teachers in the joy and value of sport.
“We know how important all school staff are in providing opportunities for their students and anyone on a school payroll is eligible, so bring along the groundsman and your teacher aides.
“While sport is always competitive, it’s all about having fun and making new connections – schools can merge to form teams. We have a team builder on the NZTG Facebook page to help with that.”
