The Zayed Energy of the Future Prize aims to identify and promote achievements in the area of environmental preservation. The award was created in 2008 by Sheikh bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, and is aimed at inspiring future generations across the world to be responsible, sustainable citizens.

Schools are encouraged to submit a detailed proposal for a project that promotes renewable energy and sustainability – such as improvements in energy or water efficiency, or a reduction in waste – with clear and measurable benefits. The successful school will win the US $100,000 Oceania prize to fund their project’s completion.

Cashmere High School in Christchurch won the $100,000 prize in 2016 to further develop and implement their award-winning sustainable energy project called ‘ecoDriver’ (read more about that by visiting

Students from Cashmere High were presented the Zayed Energy of the Future prize at a special ceremony held in the United Arab Emirates by Vice President Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid, Mexico’s President Enrique Pena Nieto and Abu Dhabi’s Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed.
