Organised by the New Zealand Secondary School Sports Council (NZSSSC), the NZ Teachers’ Games aims to re-engage teachers in the joy and value of sport.

More than 600 teachers and school staff from early childhood, primary and secondary schools across the country spent three days in Mt Maunganui at the second NZ Teachers’ Games.

From bowls to netball, futsal, golf and hockey fives, teachers networked, laughed, won, lost and most important of all had a lot of fun together.

Westlake Girls’ High School teacher Deb Wareham says it’s great to get outside her school environment and do this together.

Her Black Swans team played in the netball and dressed up for the trivia night.

“There are about 20 of us here playing sport together and it has been a fantastic team-building experience”.

Those who travelled furthest were from Christchurch’s Cashmere High School: Will, Anna, Brett and Grant took part in the beach volleyball, fours bowls and the Great Race.

“It has been an awesome event”, says Anna. “We didn’t know what to expect and it has exceeded everything we thought it might be. Well worth the trip and we will be spreading the word down south and definitely returning.”

Watch out for the third games in 2019 and plan on getting a team together!
